In this video, Athila and Andre explore the five steps that you should take in order to create an outline that will ensure that the message in your video is clear and engaging.

What is a Video Outline?

An outline is a simple document that helps you to break down your ideas and to clarify the message that you want to get across. A Squared Media’s video outline has 5 parts:

  1. Hook
  2. What to Expect
  3. Explore the Topics
  4. Practical Takeaways
  5. Call to Action

Each of these sections has a specific purpose and provides great value to your audience.

Part 1: Hook

The first, and one of the most essential parts of a video outline, is the hook. A hook is a sentence or visual cue that is placed in the first 3 seconds of the video to capture the attention of the audience. The hook must be something that your target audience would find interesting.

To create a hook, you should think about the common problems your audience deals with in relation to the topics you’re covering. Next, you can start brainstorming a few sentences that can be said at the beginning of your video to pique the interest of your audience.

Part 2: What to Expect

The next part of the video outline is the “What to Expect” section. Here you will break down the topics that you will be covering during your video.

We recommend that you cover three topics throughout your video. This will give your audience a clear understanding of what you will be covering and set the right expectations for the questions that will be answered. The viewers will also get an understanding of the value that you will be provided to them.

Part 3: Explore the Topics

If a video is a 5-course meal, this part would be the main course. This is where you can explore the topics you set out to cover. It is important to be more personal with your audience. This means giving a quick back story and personal examples in order to relate more with your viewers.

When covering the topics, you should hone in on the 3-5 most important aspects of each topic. This way the viewer will not become overwhelmed with information and you will have the opportunity to expand more on each topic in future videos if you wish.

Part 4: Practical Takeaways

The fourth step is when you summarize what you covered in a simple manner. This is important so that the viewers can leave with practical takeaways from your video. We generally suggest that you have one valuable takeaway for each of the topics covered. This ensures people are receiving value during every moment of the video.

Part 5: Call to Action

The last part of the outline should be the call to action. This is the part at the end of the video where you can encourage your audience to take a specific action. Whether that’s sending them to your website, commenting on the video, or sharing the video with others.
